Arezou Anzari, Ph.D.

Arezou Anzari, Ph.D.

Postdoctoral Scholar, UCLA Civil & Environmental Engineering

Dr. Arezou Anvari is currently a postdoc scholar in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UCLA. Her research interests include membrane fabrication, modification and characterization, membrane-based removal of contaminants and nutrient recovery from wastewater, providing sustainable source of freshwater by desalination of high saline water, and application of thermally and electrically conductive membranes in water and wastewater treatment. Her current research focuses on advance materials for desalination and water purification. Prior to joining UCLA, Dr. Anvari completed her PhD in Environmental Engineering at Temple University. Her research focused on developing an enhanced membrane distillation using radio frequency induction heating. Before attending Temple University, she finished her M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering at Sharif University of Technology, where she worked on mitigation of membrane fouling for water and wastewater treatment by surface modification.

Dr. Derrick S. Dlamini is currently a Post-Doctoral researcher at the department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at UCLA. His research interests include membranes, nanomaterials and electrochemistry applied to clean energy and water production as well as human health and environmental protection. He has previously worked at TECHNION-Israel Institute of Technology (Israel), University of Swaziland (Eswatini), University of South Africa (South Africa), Sultan Qaboos University (Oman), and Tiangong University (China). Derrick has a BSc in Mathematics and Chemistry from the University of Swaziland (2009) and a PhD from the University of Johannesburg in collaboration with UCLA (2013).

McKenzie Lynn Fowler

McKenzie Lynn Fowler

McKenzie Fowler is currently a first-year Master’s student pursuing her M.S in Water Resources and Environmental Engineering at UCLA. She is working on a research project for a smart water filtration system with her advisor Dr. Eric Hoek and her peers. Her interests include topics related to sustainable energy, water treatment, and bioremediation. Before coming to UCLA she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Arizona and worked for Mitsubishi Cement Co. as a quality control intern. After obtaining her Master’s degree she hopes to work in Los Angeles in a field related to Chemical and Environmental Engineering and gain further experience in research and development.

Dr. Yu (Rain) Miao is currently Post-Doctoral Research Associate of Civil & Environmental Engineering at UCLA. His training and competence include fundamental engineering, analytical chemistry, molecular biotechnology, meta-omics, and computation. His research interest is to apply systems biology tools, including synthetic approaches from genome, cellular, and community level, to provide solutions for various areas, e.g., natural resource, agriculture, energy, ecosystem, environment, and public health. Dr. Miao has published 24 peer-reviewed articles on Water Research, Journal of Hazardous Materials, Chemical Engineering Journal, Bioresource Technology, etc., and he served as the reviewer for over 20 journals and UCLA Undergraduate Scholarship Application. Dr. Miao majored in Environmental Engineering and obtained Bachelor in Ocean University of China (2012), Master in Nanjing University (2015) where he was awarded the 2016 Excellent Master Thesis in Jiangsu Province, and Doctorate in UCLA (2019) where he received the 2019 UCLA Outstanding Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering Award.

He obtained his Ph.D. in environmental sciences at IPICYT, Mexico, in 2019. His research interests include carbon-based materials, their use in adsorption processes and their electrochemical applications.

Unnati Rao is a Postdoctoral Scholar in the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She completed her PhD under the guidance of Dr. David Jassby at UCLA in September 2020. Unnati has a master’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Mumbai, India. Her current research focusses on the development and testing of membrane materials for water treatment. Specifically, she is working on the development and long-term testing of high flux and high rejection seawater reverse osmosis membranes. She has over six technical publications and has presented her work in two national level conferences.

Dr. Jingbo Wang is currently a postdoctoral scholar of Civil & Environmental Engineering at UCLA. Her research interests include advanced water treatment and desalination, as well as application of nanotechnology in membrane separation processes for water, energy and resource recovery. Wang has degrees in civil and environmental engineering from Wuhan University (B.Eng., 2012) and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Ph.D., 2018).

Jishan Wu

Mr. Jishan Wu is a Ph.D. student at UCLA’s Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. His research revolves around environmental protection and advanced water treatment technologies. During his undergraduate study, as the first author and co-author, he produced three journal articles related to environmental engineering. He takes on the role as the lead author of a book on “Sustainable Desalination and Water Reuse,” which is accepted and in press with Morgan & Claypool Publishers. His future work revolves around developing novel ultra-high pressure reverse osmosis (UHPRO) and to accomplish minimum/zero liquid discharge at a lower cost than conventional evaporative methods.
